We recently spent three weeks driving through France - over 3000 km and used out Tom Tom throughout. Getting the French map onto an Australian device was easy and inexpensive. The selection of routes and the subsequent directions were all that we expected .

I recently added the UK & Ireland maps to my TOMTOM to support a driving trip from London to Scotland.
The support from the Technical staff was excellent and the directions from the unit were also very good.

THE simplest to use gps ever made. i have owned two of them now (the first one got stolen) I have used, or tried too, most of the other brands the TomTom is by far the most intuitive, being male, i refuse to read the instructions.
I have traveled through two countries & 5 major cities (read:totally unknown to me) with the same total confidence that i have commuting to & from work, you can't beat that feeling!

A great easy to use easy to follow device. I have not had any experience with GPS but found my Tom Tom fantastic. I am sure that using this device added to the driving pleasure and safety of my holiday. The ease of use , clarity of speech and instructions, lane changes and speed limits and warnings are all great features.

started out loving tomtom Xl250. as a taxi driver thought it was indispencable until i realized maps really not current and a lot of innaccuracies in street numbers. then the glass developed a "bleed" and pressing certain commands would bring up the command next to it or no response at all. also warranty misleading - retail store said check out the web which when you do says 2 year warranty if purchased from outside America - in truth is only one year when purchased in australia - disapointedly original docos suplied with the XL makes no mention of either period - even the retailers are in the dark. enough to put me off TomTom for good after enjoying it for the first 14 months - can i trust buying another one?

It gets you where you want to go but if you go into the city of Sydney it dosen't always work sometime it tells you to turn left, and you have just passed the turn so you have to travel to the next turn or takes a long time to tell you which way to go I think it could be the tall building that causes that. but mostly works ok

Lacking and inaccurate
Date:9 September 2011
Favorite features: Spoken Directions including street names
Does not show direction at top in 2D only North at top. Very annoying. Also, has no idea about where you are if driving on roads in the outback of Australia. Identifies the road and shows you on it but but gives ridiculous estimated times of arrival and distance. For example says it will take 22 hours to drive 20 minutes down the road. Location of roads are also inaccurate by up to 2km despite them having been in the same position for many years.

I live in a regional area and I use my Tom Tom for travelling away from home. it is a wonderful product as it I no longer need road maps. Being an older person 70 + I did have problems setting destinations as the instructions assume the user is using electronic instuments frequently which is not the case. Example, I was bogged in mud outside a small country town in western Queensland and when I contacted the the recovery team they asked me where I was and I didn't know as I was in a strage area. They found me through my mobile phone. A week after I was rescued I was looking at Tom Tom and realised that all I had to do was hit the WHERE AM I BUTTON. Young people would have no problem following the commands, maybe the instructions could be made a little easier for us oldies to follow Apart from that a great product

Favorite features: Ease of Use
The TomTom XL 250 replaced another brand which was much larger, more expensive and apart from the database being suspect out of the urban and regional cities, it was a wholly satisfactory unit. When it died [of overheating in a closed motorcar] we decided to change back to the Tom Tom, mainly because it has a very good daylight screen and the price was very reasonable. Although we have only had it several months the XL 250 has few faults except where there is extensive road construction [such as the western approach to Brisbane] We haven't tried it to get to say, Eagle Farm from Ipswich and this is a stumbling block for most GPS.
In regional and western NSW it has been largely faultless. One of the main reasons for changing brands was the constant pestering, by the previous maker,to upgrade the maps and add special effects. None of these upgrades was a credible improvement and just cost money for virtually nothing.
I notice there is a tendency for Tom Tom to do exactly the same thing

Travelling with Tom Tom
Date:25 August 2011
Favorite features: IQ Routes™ Technology
The simplicity of loading a destination, finding what the little man inside says is the best route, watching how he responds when you override makes one more aware of the journey and the alternates. Tom has usually something interesting to offer. He speaks to me in easily understood language and accent. The screen size is adequate. The unit has given me some difficuly maintinaing battery charge.

As I am a country user and really only use my Tom Tom when on holidays. I live in a very small country town and we have no need to use a navigation device except when away, but if I have a concern that is the difficulty in changing routes via a particular town. I find that I have to enter each town I want to go through to by-pas the route my Tom Tom want's me to go to get to my destination.

Not what i expected
Date:24 August 2011
I am an aged care worker and thought that a navigation device would make my job easier. I set the Tom Tom up with shortest route, and have on several occasions ended up travelling out of my way to go to places that I know can be travelled by a shorter distance. A few times I have encountered street names that are not the same as what has been eneterd into Tom Tom. I have also found that it is sometimes quicker just to look at a map than to eneter all the information into Tom Tom, although once doing so the information is stored for the time I use it, which really is of no use because once I have been to as place, I can return by memory. Overall the only time my Tom Tom would really be of any use would be when I need to drive in Melbourne, which is not very often.

Not bad at the price.
Date:22 August 2011
Overall I am reasonably happy with my purchase. Points:
- I miss not having the next street not appearing at the top.
- I miss not having the street numbers as part of the street name at the bottom.
- The maps seem somewhat not up-to-date. Closed roads, wrong speed limits, inappropriate turns (while on bridge being order to turn onto the road below.)
- The device seems confused as to my home location. Home is marked as being four houses past my place, on the wrong side of the road and there are no houses on the other side of the road, just a cricket ground.
- The final turn statement should be made perhaps fifty metres earlier than it does now. Being told to turn, in three lanes of traffic, in the city, right at the intersection is no help.
- The unit does not like dirt roads. The distance to go, time to reach the destination freeze, yet the arrival time moves on.
- On some complex turns it's unclear as to which road to take.
- There is a round-a-bout nearby that has five entry/exit points. One of the roads no loger exists, so I edited the road and it now shows the closed road as unavailable, yet the voice command still counts the intersection as having five exits. It displays the second exit, but says "take the third exit."
- I like the big screen.
- I like that the screen intensity changes at twilight.
- I'm not sure why, but the batteries seem to go flat when the unit is turned off.
I've made lots of edits regarding closed roads, speed limits, etc, and uploaded them. I'm trying to help.
Hope this is of some use to you.

found line guidance to be excellent. speed camera alerts a must. xl240 provided better warning for when you are going over the speed limit as it was a noise alarm, whereas xl250 shows the speed you are travelling as being highlighted, which you will miss unless you are watching your nav screen. otherwise wouldn't be without it.
