Tomtom is excellent
Date:28 August 2011
Favorite features: Ease of Use
Tomtom is my first satnav device and I am really impressed. It takes all the stress out of driving in new places, and is so easy to use even my technophobic mother can muddle through. It doesn't quite get full marks because it can come up with some odd routes, especially in the countryside, but it will always get you from A to B and that's what you want. The best thing is that even if you miss a turning it calmly tells you what to do instead - gone are the days of being beaten with a map by the missis. Can't quite understand people who have taken issue with Tomtom's confusion over the difference between 'turn left', 'bear left' and 'keep left' - if it says one of those, my advice is to go left.

Buying a Tomtom fundamentally changed my approach to driving and reaching out to farflung places. Went on a long drive to a large part of scotland and was delighted to see the system working perfectly even in far out places in Isle of Skye or Gairloch. Additionally, the advanced lane changing advise was extremely useful in negotiating complex traffic grids. Wonderful product and extremely simple to install and get cracking.

My Bad day
Date:01 November 2012
Favorite features: Advanced Lane Guidance, Ease of Use, Voice command and control, Rich points of Interest
let me sart by saying i just got a new tom-tom the other day.
i orignaly had a 910 which i used to cross the country Ontario to Albert throw the state no less. coming home on the trans canada high way it helped out more finding new routs every time the rood was washed out. For the most part it wasn't bad, except when i asked it to take the shortest route and it took me off the mane high way and threw some towns. It tried a on ramp that no longer existed. an as for the roodes being washed out it would have been nies to no soner. definatly a pane, but despit all that when my old one died on me. i still got another one. incidently, the old one broke after a can of pop broke, and submerged the old one in my center consel.

generally OK

As in the title - If someone ask "do you buy it again ?" answer is - yes, but...
This "but" is rather to take into account for next generation of tom-toms than to say "product is bad"
previous - go 910 for 4? years, used for visiting UK, Ireland, trip UK-Poland. Problem with charging, after changed a battery it worked same way- only if you (in my car - passenger) press the screen to the base all the time.
tom-tom 20 after a "test trip" London-seaside:
1./ the worst - motorway speed - roadworks finished a few months ago, newly!! tom-tom shows 50mph (there is 70). horrible warning sound for about 5 miles. My proposition - not provide for speed limit for roadworks - if any driver doesn't see roadworks he/she should be banned from driving. Otherways we have a news about driver who went to a lake followed GPS information. I supposed a new map after improvement of roads befor the Olympic Games - doubt it works.
2./ disillusion about IQ routes - info - 2 min, ( I didn't believe) in practice - after 40 mins in the traffic jam I put (Sunday, sunny day, towards seaside)- alternative road - bingo ! My proposition - more time stages (not only days of week but seasons as well - the same route in winter probably is clear- average - 2 min late). 2 propositions to driver - calculated time road, "real time road" real means not the best real , but average.
3./ avoid roadworks - road back to London. From 1rdb to second rdb 2.5 mile. after about 20 min and 0.5 mile (not error of tom-tomIQ route - an accident this time)I put - avoid roadworks for 3?-the longer- mile. tom -tom didn't offer - "U-turn", but -"go forward" the rest 2 mile (40mins) and turn. It was error, later I checked - it was possible U-turn and go other way. My proposition - more "intelligent" device - if a car spend 20 mins for 0.5mile it means driver want to avoid go forward - the route should be calculated include U-turn. Driver should be asked - is possible U- turn ?
4./ Lane Guidance - nice ! I don't know if it possible to cancel it - modernization of lanes is more possible than modernization of the whole road and I'm little affraid than even a new map (point one) will not include it. With previous go 910 I lost two times, both because of lane. with this features it will be easier, but not every lanes are included. there was not lanes at lookalike roundabout junction - I understand it would be difficult to put everything. My proposition - split the screen if driver want to do it - half with lanes, half with "normal" view. (or it is and I don't have enough knowleadge)
5./ automatically change into night view - it happened about 200 yards b4 "change lane" at an important junction - should be more "intelligent" and to wait for easy time. I was surprised, didn't make error, but braked saddenly.
6./ I sense go 910 calculated a new route after my turn - specially or not- more quickly - only I sense, it works anyway.
7. extra - there is traffic receiver in your offer - I doubt it works - recently it was not information on radio about accident for one hrs, but if I can check - after my trip - at your website - put my journey and time, how it would look with information from receiver, and I see tom-tom would have this informtion and avoid traffic, |I would buy it. - not sure if it makes any sense.
Generally I'm happy, maybe a little bit disappointed , (points 1,2,3), but it shows that this product was good from beginning and it is difficult to improve good.

No good for customised route planning
Date:11 August 2012
Favorite features: Ease of Use, spoken street names
My first sat nav bought after doing some on line research.Good price,
easy to use and very good in the car. However when I tried to use the Tyre program for some custom route planning after I mounted it on my motorbike I found it wasn't compatible. So instead of planning the whole route on my computer and then downloading it I can only input 4 way points to a final destination.I found this disappointing and would have bought a different model had I known of this beforehand.

Not what I wanted
Date:26 April 2012
I live in London. While living in London tube stations and train stations are very basic reference points and locations for navigation. But this sat nav doesn't give you any information about tube stations at all.I have no idea what rich points of interest means.I am sure this must be the case with other cities too.I will not recommend it. I am extremely disappointed.

Excellent product

Favorite features: Advanced Lane Guidance
I have been using the Start 20 Europe for a few months now, and previosuly had used a Tom Tom Start. I am so glad I upgraded to the Start 20 Europe, it is much easier to use, they keypad for putting in addresses is bigger and easier, and the features such as Lane Guidance make it much easier to not get lost! Would definitely recommend.

Take me home !

Favorite features: Advanced Lane Guidance, Spoken Directions including street names, tims voice calm & clear
I took my Tom Tom to Italy, Spain and Hungary this year and it never
let me down once. In Italy it found my hotel even though it was up some
ridiculous narrow lanes in the middle of a small town.
In Spain I relied upon it to take me right across the heart of the country
and directly to the Ferry in Santander and in Hungary I used it to find a
Summer camp in the forest following un-named roads. Incredible!
My only criticism of this excellent product which I have owned now for
three months is the
On/Off switch on the back which seems to have a poor connection!

Use in France and Spain.....
Date:05 September 2011
Favorite features: Ease of Use, Spoken Directions including street names
I use the Start 20 Europe extensively this summer (2011) in France and northern Spain.
The Frence maps appeared to be better than the Spanish ones... and you have to watch out for being taken down narrow tracks sometimes (got a bit caught out with my caravan !!!)
Overall the unit performed well and saved us the usual driver <> navigator arguments :-)

Idiot proof, simple and fun to use gadget. Good screen definition and staightforward windscreen adhesion/removal mechanism. Particularly like the level of detail given on audio direction i.e. names of minor roads etc., and above speed limit indicator. No nonsense device to help get you from A to B with minimum fuss.

MAP ACCURACY

I recently paid £67 for updates but the mapping around Le Touquet (France) isn't right at all! We counted 3 roundabouts (one of which has been there many many years) that weren't on the Tom Tom map for some reason. Otherwise accuracy has proved to be very good, and the speed limit changes on roads abroad are really good and accurate. Get Le Touquet sorted Tom!!

Overall pleased with the Sat nav. It can take a bit of a time to find the signal when first switched on.
Some routes seem to be questionable!!
Lane guidance very good helped a lot with busy junctions which we did not know beforehand
Maps a bit out of date despite being told if there were any updates withing 3 months they would be available free of charge - obviously bee roadworks on a stretch of motorway but long gone! Sat nav still thinks it's a 40 !!
Pronounciation of some names are interesting!!
Overall pleased with it certainly better than my last one from a rival starting with G ending with a n mentioning no names!!

Loving it even better than my first TomTom
Date:26 August 2011
Favorite features: Advanced Lane Guidance, Ease of Use, Spoken Directions including street names
Very good product. Easy to use, simple to mount, easy to read. Particularly like the image display change on junction guidance to show me what lane to be in. Also, I like the spoken street names and the multilingual spoken word support.
Plus it actually recognises my home address - my previous TomTom did not, so I had to go with my neighbour's address instead.

Good product but surprising omission
Date:24 August 2011
Favorite features: Ease of Use, Spoken Directions including street names
I was given the unit as a present last month and have just used it in anger for the first time during a camping holiday in France. I found the Tomtom easy to use and the options are largely intuitive. The windscreen mounting was simple to use with good suction though after a few days my daughter managed to break it.
The internal battery seemed long lasting so I was able to plan visits for the next day while relaxing at the dinner table with a bottle of wine. It coped very well with all the French roads and no road seemed too small. There were the occasional glitches where it was convinced I should go down a dirt track or across a field but as long as you don't blindly follow the instructions you will be fine.
What I thought odd was the lack of a limited speed facility. Driving a campervan, the normal estimated time of arrival is not that useful. On my previous Tomtom I could set the limited speed at 55mph and it adjusted your ETA accordingly. This model does not have that facility so if you are a slow driver or have a caravan or campervan, you may wish to reconsider buying this model. I am unclear if the lack of this facility is just restricted to the Start 20 or if it has been removed from all models.
To get updates, the Tomtom needs to be attached to a computer. The Start 20 uses a new interface called MyTomtom, which needs to be downloaded. You will need to check whether your operating system is supported. My first two choices, Ubuntu and Windows 2000, are not so I had to drag out an old Windows XP laptop. The online community is somewhat critical that models are being released while the software and certain facilities such as importing POIs and backing up data is still under development. These were not issues for me but it is a point to be considered if you are moving from an existing Tomtom where you expect such facilities to be standard on a new model.

I brought the start 20 Europe , after using a hire car in France with a built in sat nav. which was really hard to program, you had to twist a knob and press a button to select each letter. It was rubbish compared to the Tomtom,s touch screen . I like the way lanes are now marked by flashing yellow arrows on motorway junction . Really helpful when there is more than one turn off from the same exit!
