Lifetime updates? Really?

The first XXL 540 TM that i received, after spending 2 hours with tech support they told me to send it back to the store I purchased it from. Junk. I just received its replacement, the big selling point is the lifetime map updates. Well when you try to use the code it says its not compatible because you need to update the device. To have room on the device to update it you have to delete the map on it. I did so, updated the device... and the lifetime map code still said the same thing.
If you expect this to work the way it says it will.. well it doesn't.

I recently purchased the XXL550 from Radio Shack on sale for $99.95. It came with the lifetime traffic and lifetime maps. I was somewhat apprehensive with the purchase based on the size and price, but decided to give it a try. I own 2 GPS Systems from the competition, and they are fine equipment. They do not compare to the XXL. Maps and Graphics are clearer in the XXL, turn by turn directions are a little more accurate, and give you more adfvance warning of the turn, and travel times for trips both local and an 800 mile trip were within 1 minute of the estimate. That was amazing. The unit is very easy to use. I would change a few things, including the strange mounting system, but it is functional and although different than I am used to, works just fine. Overall, I would highly recommend this unit, and I am intending to purchase another one today for my other vehicle. If they just made a motorcycle mount for this one, I would buy one for it too..........

Have had my TomTom for over 2 years. I use it often - not jsut for vacations - and have always liked the accuracy. This year we forgot TomTom when we flew to our destination so added a GPS rental to our rental car. We were very frustrated with a competitor's product. After using something else for two weeks, I am even happier now with my TomTom than I was before. I do give the competitor's product an A+ for it's holder in the car, where I give TomTom a C-, but now for certain, I would never have anything other than a TomTom system.

Love my TomTom, but get frustrated at it saying "stay right" on a road that has a dedicated turn lane. Happens way too many times for my liking. If the road had a "Y" or something I could understand, but not with a dedicated turn lane that doesn't go both left and straight. Hope you can correct this little annoyance soon!

A great value, does every thing I need and I gave one to my son as a Christmas gift. I know that there are new versions, but the XXL 540 gets me to where I want to go. I still am amazed by it.

This is the best GPS out there. Everyone I talk to complains about their Gps not getting them where they want etc. I have never had it take me more than 100 ft from destination. Very easy to use and very easy to follow.

I,ve got the xxl 540tm. I love it. works very well. But the map is very cartoon like!!! Should be like google maps. And it is very jumpy. The mount is just sucks. its hard to open. and it doesnt stick.

From the factory, the mounting bracket is very stiff, requiring two hands to open and close it.
If you look closely at the hinges you will see two soft rubber plugs.
Pry them out using your fingernail, underneath you will find two small Phillips head screws. Using a small screwdriver these screws can be adjusted to your liking. When finished, reinsert plugs.

I order a XXL 540TM and a XL 530 came in the box. This is my third TOM TOM they all set up easy. This one will not change to English and is not working properly. Dosen't respond to to screen touches.

I purchased this 20 yrs too late. I was always apprehensive driving before,Not anymore. I even bought the map for Ireland and travelled around with EASE. Talked to other vacationers who rented a gps paid 75 euro a piece to borrow the gps while mine was 50 dollars and came home with me! Can't recommendthis ENOUGH> It is also nice when traveling in big cities on the highways converging with other highways it tells you to take the exit then stay in certain lane then merge to next exit in advance so you don't look like a fool not knowing where your going and almost causing accidents. LOVE IT

Key element is the system does not state/vocalize recomputing your directions should you miss a turn. System just recomputes your directions from where you are to your targeted destination without any voice information indicating you screwed up! Next voice update you hear is the correct turn needed to continue to your destination.

This is the best thing I ever owned everyone should have It has saved us from getting lost we can travel to different town be on time I reccomend this to everyone since I have very low vision the voice is clear and the screen can be made larger I love this. Can`t go anywhere without it.

Got a foreign language on the screen - called customer support - no waiting and I talked to a person in the USA! Got the problem solved.
The 540 series supports Itinerary planning - very handy as you can plan your travel the way you want to go. You can set a lot of personal preferences. One we like is to avoid freeways and then take a nice scenic tour without getting lost. Spoken instructions are clear and extensive . Lane guidance is very handy. Tomtom Home has lots of extra POIs and red-light camera alerts. Its your buddy on a road trip.

I had problems with tomtom home when I plugged it in. I previously had a tomtom home on my computer - not sure I did it right because it said not enough memory - makes me concerned I will have problems when I use the lifetime maps updates. Is there a number I can call to talk with someone and walk me though it?
